Carbamide peroxide active ingredient in whitening gels. It is the most commonly used whitening gel for at-home teeth whitening purposes. Carbamide peroxide whitening gels come in different strength. The most common concentrations sold and used are 16%, 22% and 35%. We recommend our 22% whitening gel for most teeth whitening applications. Gels with 35% concentration act faster. With these gels whitening application should not be more than 30 minutes per treatment. The 22% concentration allows for longer treatment and deeper penetration into your teeth surface. Thus over a longer time period these gels may be more effective then stronger gels.
Carbamide peroxide gels can be stored for longer time periods. Usually for about 2 years. Thus these gels are better fitted for at-home teeth whitening as they can be sold, shipped and stored without loss of strength.
Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient in many professional teeth whitening gels. It is the most commonly used whitening gel for professional in-office teeth whitening. Hydrogen peroxide is about 3 times as potent as carbamide peroxide. For at-home teeth whitening the most commonly sold concentrations sold are 6%, 9% and 12%. Because of its potency 9% hydrogen peroxide gels have the same strength as 22% carbamide peroxide gels.
When compared to Carbamide peroxide, Hydrogen peroxide gels are faster acting thus requiring short treatment times. Hydrogen peroxide is relatively unstable and therefore it is difficult to store and ship. That is why hydrogen peroxide is rarely used for at-home teeth whitening purposes.
Dentists often use extremely strong whitening gels (35% hydrogen peroxide or more) to speed up the whitening process. These gels are highly potent and cannot be applied in a home setting.
Most customers do not feel any or very little sensitivity shortly after whitening treatments. In case you have overly sensitive teeth the whitening gel may make your teeth somewhat sensitive for a short period of time after treatments. This sensitivity is not permanent and usually goes away within 30 minutes. It takes about half an hour for your teeth to replenish the necessary minerals in your teeth surface. Once the mineral balance is back to normal sensitivity goes away and will not return.
There are several ways of limiting or eliminating teeth sensitivity. Wearing the whitening trays for shorter time periods or reducing the frequency of treatments from daily to every other day will reduce or eliminate problems with sensitivity. Also we highly recommend the use certain toothpastes - such as Sensodyne – that contain desensitizing materials. Switching to these toothpastes for the duration of treatments may completely eliminate any sensitivity issues.
Please visit your dental professional before you begin teeth whitening. Cavities can become very sensitive to teeth whitening gels. It is very normal to whiten teeth with filling and crowns however open cavities must be taken care of prior to teeth whitening.
Crowns and fillings will not whiten. Teeth whitening gels only work on your own teeth. If you have older crowns or fillings it is likely that these were shade matched to your teeth years ago. As years pass by the shade of crowns will not change making them look whiter than your own teeth over time. In this case you may do not have to worry. When you begin whitening your teeth will become brighter and their shade will be closer to the existing crowns and fillings making the difference even more visible.
If you have newer crowns or fillings or you want to whiten your teeth to a lighter shade then you may have to replace your crowns after you completed the whitening treatment.

No. Please do not eat or drink during treatments. Also if at all possible wait another 30 minutes after treatments before eating. Tooth surface is more prone to decay immediately after whitening treatments. Your body needs this time to re-mineralize your teeth surface and bring your teeth back to normal strength.
